ABERDEEN’S WONDERFUL WHITE STAR LINE – TALES OF A MIGHTY GLOB-SPANNING SHIPPING EMPIRE,   by Roy Pedersen

Saturday 1st November 2025 marks the two hundredth anniversary of the founding of a mighty Aberdeen based  shipping company by a remarkable Aberdonian – George Thompson Junior. Thompson created the Aberdeen White Star Line whose famous green hulled ships, most of them built in Aberdeen, combined beauty with an ability to turn a profit, none more so than the incomparable tea clipper, THERMOPYLÆ, great rival to the CUTTY SARK, and regarded by many old salts as the faster ship.

In its later years, the elegant steamships of the Aberdeen Line were among the most highly regarded on British Imperial seaways of the late Victorian and Edwardian period. The competence and quiet courtesy of the officers and men on the comfortable and reliable route to South Africa and Australasia attracted much favourable comment by emigrants and cargo owners.

The remarkable story of the Aberdeen White Star Line is told in this illustrated book, which gives a flavour of the extraordinary exploits of resourceful men and outstanding ships within the context of a general history of the company and its times. The cast includes astute businessmen, pioneering shipbuilders, shrewd and often kindly captains, hardy sailors and hopeful emigrants.
